Sweet Tooth is an American fantasy drama television series developed by Jim Mickle. It is based on the comic book series created by Jeff Lemire and published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint. The series premiered on Netflix in June 2021,[1] with a second season released in April 2023,[2][3] and a third and final season announced the following month.[4]

Development on the show began in 2018 at Hulu. By 2020, the series had moved to Netflix. Filming took place in New Zealand. Nonso Anozie, Christian Convery, Adeel Akhtar, Stefania LaVie Owen, and Dania Ramirez star while James Brolin provides the narration.

Sweet Tooth is set in a world in which a virus has killed a majority of the world's human population, coinciding with the emergence of hybrid babies that are born with animal characteristics. Convery plays Gus, a naïve 10-year-old part-deer boy, who sets out to find his mother after the death of his father.

The series has received critical acclaim, earning twenty nominations across its first two seasons at the Children's and Family Emmy Awards, winning four.

Premise[edit]

Ten years ago in "The Great Crumble", society collapsed due to a viral pandemic of a disease known as the Sick (or the H5G9 virus), wiping out most of the world's human population. At the same time, many babies start to be born as mute hybrids with animal body parts and other characteristics.

Unsure whether hybrids are the cause of the virus or a result of it, many humans fear and hunt them. Gus, a part-deer hybrid, lives in the wilderness with his father whom he calls "Pubba". Pubba dies when Gus is nine years old and Gus discovers a box he buried beneath a tree that contains what Gus believes is a photograph of his mother, with the word "Colorado" written on it.

Gus accidentally starts a fire, which brings hunters who try to kill him, but he is saved by Tommy Jepperd, a lone traveler also drawn by the fire. Jepperd tries to leave Gus, but the boy insists that he escort him to Colorado to find his mother, and he relents.

The story also follows Dr. Aditya Singh as he tries to find a cure for the Sick, which his wife has lived with for years; and Bear, who is the leader and founder of the Animal Army which saves and protects hybrids. Bear is looking for her sister Wendy, a part-pig hybrid rescued by Aimee Eden, a former therapist whose sanctuary for hybrids is called "The Preserve".[5]

In the near future, society collapses in an event known as the Great Crumble following the emergence of both a virus known as the Sick and half-human and half-animal babies known as hybrids. Before this, a father runs away into Yellowstone National Park with his deer hybrid baby Gus. Gus's father builds a secure base in the deep woods and is referred to by Gus as "Pubba". Ten years later, Pubba eventually dies from the Sick protecting Gus. In his frustration, Gus starts a daytime fire which attracts the attention of poachers who lay a candy trap that Gus easily falls for. Gus, however, is quickly saved by a man who Gus calls "Big Man". While distrusting of Big Man at first, Gus eventually explains his plan to find his mother, Birdie, in Colorado from a map and photo he found in a safe. He chases after Big Man to seek the latter's help with his quest.

A few weeks after the Great Crumble, a therapist named Aimee Eden heads out into the deserted city and makes a home at the local zoo. Back in the present, Gus persistently follows Big Man and insists he take him to Colorado. After eating all of Big Man's food, Gus leads them to a Visitor's Center from where he can smell food, where they find a family living there. It is revealed that Big Man is Tommy Jepperd: a former football player and a former member of the Last Men; a group of people who hunt hybrids. Meanwhile, a doctor named Aditya Singh temporarily treats his infected wife Rani through experimental medicine provided by Dr. Gladys Bell, who wants him to take over her work as she is dying from terminal cancer. Jepperd begins to think the family at the Center may be better company for Gus. While attempting to leave that night, the Center is attacked by Last Men who Jepperd manages to kill. Fearing for their safety, the family ask Jepperd and Gus to leave. Jepperd agrees to part ways with Gus after helping him get to Colorado. Aimee discovers a hybrid pig baby outside the Zoo.

Gus and Jepperd continue on foot to the Market where there is a train that will take Gus to Colorado. Jepperd disguises Gus as a human so they can get him on the train, but while purchasing him a ticket Gus wanders off and meets a girl in the Market who comforts him when he panics. Dr. Singh takes over for Dr. Bell and starts working with the Last Men who provide him with supplies. He and Rani reluctantly attend a party where the host Doug is discovered to be infected. The house where the party was at is set on fire with Doug inside it to prevent the spread of the Sick. As he is about to board the train, Gus smells Jepperd's medicine among the boxes being loaded, so they steal the supplies but are caught and Gus is exposed as a hybrid. While transporting the two through the forest, the Last Men are ambushed by teenagers dressed as animals who kill them and rescue Gus and Jepperd. The leader dressed as a Bear reveals herself as the girl from the Market.

She asks Aimee if they can keep him. Bear reveals to Gus that Jepperd was once a Last Man and has hurt hybrids, but Gus doesn't care as he says Jepperd is his friend. At the execution of Jepperd, Bear reveals she will not carry out the execution for Gus's sake. Furious, her second-in-command Tiger initiates a coup. During the chaos, Jepperd and Gus escape, with Bear following as she abandons the Animal Army. Bear finds Gus and Jepperd and gives them Birdie's last known address. During their journey to the train, Gus falls into a valley filled with purple flowers that accompany the Sick. While unconscious, Gus has a vision of Pubba before Jepperd and Bear rescue Gus from the flowers. Aimee and Wendy continue to build the Preserve for hybrids which the Last Men find and tag. The town discovers Nancie's corpse in the clinic's freezer, but Adi tries to convince them Nancie was Sick. When Rani starts showing symptoms, the neighborhood binds them inside their home and sets it aflame before the Last Men and General Abbot arrive and save them while dispersing the crowd.

Jepperd, Bear, and Gus manage to board the moving train to Colorado. The Singhs bluff that Dr. Singh is working on a cure that is not detailed in the book in order to convince General Abbot that he must spare both of their lives. On the train, Jepperd encounters Jimmy, a former teammate of his. Aimee realizes they have been found by the Last Men and that the Preserve is no longer safe. During their journey, Jimmy provides information about the location of Gus's mother Birdie, but neglects to mention that Last Men members are aboard the train. Jepperd blows his cover while attempting to retrieve Gus's stuffed toy, Dog. Jimmy holds the door for the group so they can jump off the train before sacrificing himself to hold off the Last Men. The Singhs are taken to a classified location. Aimee, Wendy, and the other Preserve hybrids pack and escape through the tunnels with Aimee remaining behind. Jeppered, Gus, and Bear reach Birdie's last known location in Essex County.

After formally meeting one night, Birdie received a call saying the military was taking over the lab. Production[edit]

Development[edit]

On November 16, 2018, it was announced that streaming service Hulu had given a pilot order to a potential television series adaptation of the comic book series. The pilot was expected to be written and directed by Jim Mickle, who was also set to executive produce alongside Robert Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Amanda Burrell and Linda Moran. Production companies involved with the pilot were slated to consist of Team Downey and Warner Bros. Television.[11] On April 9, 2020, it was announced that the series had been moved from Hulu to Netflix.[12] On May 12, 2020, Netflix had given the production a series order that consists of eight episodes with Evan Moore attached to the series as a producer and Beth Schwartz served as a writer, an executive producer, and co-showrun alongside Mickle.[13] On July 29, 2021, Netflix renewed the series for an 8-episode second season.[2][14]

Lemire has acknowledged that the series has a lighter tone than the comic book series, stating that he and Mickle wanted the series to bring a new perspective to the post-apocalyptic genre after what they believed to be an oversaturation of dark dystopian fiction released since the original comic was published.[15] On May 3, 2023, Netflix renewed the series for a third and final season.[4]

Casting[edit]

On May 12, 2020, Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, Adeel Akhtar, and Will Forte were cast in starring roles while James Brolin is set to narrate the series.[13] On July 30, 2020, Dania Ramirez joined the main cast.[6] On August 19, 2020, Neil Sandilands was cast in an undisclosed capacity.[16] On September 30, 2020, Stefania LaVie Owen joined the cast in a starring role.[17] On November 2, 2020, Aliza Vellani was promoted to series regular ahead of the series premiere.[18]

In March 2023, Naledi Murray, Neil Sandilands and Marlon Williams were promoted to series regulars while Christopher Cooper Sean Jr. and Yonas Kibreab joined the cast as series regulars for the second season.[9] In May 2023, it was reported that Rosalind Chao and Amy Seimetz had been promoted to series regulars while Cara Gee and Ayazhan Dalabayeva were cast as series regulars for the third season.[4]

Filming[edit]

In July 2020, New Zealand granted the series permission to film, despite the recent travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[19] On September 30, 2020, it was reported that the series had resumed filming after the COVID-19 pandemic halted production months earlier, with filming concluding around mid-December 2020.[17] Filming for the second season ended in early June 2022.[20] In May 2023, it was reported that the third and final season has already been filmed in New Zealand.[4]

Release[edit]

The first season of Sweet Tooth was released on June 4, 2021.[1] The eight-episode second season premiered on April 27, 2023.[3]

Reception[edit]

Audience viewership[edit]

On July 20, 2021, Netflix revealed that the series has been watched by 60 million households since its June 4 release.[21]

Critical response[edit]

For the first season, the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported an approval rating of 97% based on 74 critic reviews, with an average rating of 8/10. The website's critics consensus reads, "Emotionally engaging, superbly acted, and incredibly entertaining, Sweet Tooth will satisfy fantasy fans of all ages."[22] Metacritic gave the series a weighted average score of 78 out of 100 based on 19 critic reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[23]

Reviewing the series for Rolling Stone, Alan Sepinwall gave a rating of 3.5/5 and said, "Whether Gus and friends are having scary adventures or fun ones, those parts of Sweet Tooth are full of life, and as exciting or tense as needed. The show can be hit or miss, though, when it moves away from Gus."[24] In her review of the series, Lucy Mangan of The Guardian gave the series 3 out of 5 stars, saying "Sweet Tooth is part fantasy, part sci-fi, part whimsy, part cold-eyed realism and most points in between. It is either warmly eccentric or hysterically crazy, perfect entertainment or a horrifying attempt to parlay the pandemic into a commercially palatable mashup. It is undoubtedly aimed at a younger-than-full-adult audience."[25] Daniel D'Addario of Variety also gave the series a positive review, writing "Throughout, the show is made with a surprising degree of curiosity about what changes in society would look like across varying sorts of communities, and with a capacious imagination to boot. And while it envisions a world transformed by illness and pain, "Sweet Tooth" feels fundamentally light of touch and, well, sweet of intention. Its pandemic-riven world has been torn apart, to be sure, and in the wake comes dissension — but kindness and connection, too. Change provides the opportunity for grand-scale reimagining of what life can look like or be, as well as small opportunities to come into one's own — to find one's humanity, even when wearing deer antlers."[26]

Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com wrote in his review that "Netflix's brilliant "Sweet Tooth" may not be a direct commentary on what the world has been through in the last year, but the presence of that real-world echo is undeniable. It's a show about a devastating virus that leads people to distrust one another, go into hiding, allow their fear to drive their decisions, and ultimately form unexpected bonds. It's about isolation and grief, but it is also very much about the unpredictable connections that can end up defining us. It's intense, riveting storytelling that recalls the spirit of Amblin almost more than the nostalgia warehouse that is "Stranger Things," the king of Netflix Originals. It would have been excellent television in any year, but "Sweet Tooth" strikes a different chord in 2021 than anyone could have expected."[27] Ben Travers of Indiewire gave the series a B− and wrote "The series' efficient storytelling, world-building, and character work make it easy to switch off your brain and enjoy the adventure (that is, if you can get past The Sick). Strong performances help, too, and with so many critical core ingredients working smoothly, it's much easier for a genial little fantasy-adventure series to go down easy. "Sweet Tooth" may not offer a full meal, but sometimes all you need is a good piece of chocolate."[28] Samantha Nelson of Polygon praised the series and wrote "The COVID-19 pandemic devastated some communities, while others seemed to entirely deny its existence. Sweet Tooth combines an examination of that inequality with the morals of other excellent post-apocalyptic stories, like 28 Days Later and Mad Max: Fury Road, which argue that survival is not enough to keep people functioning. The villains in Sweet Tooth are the ones who cling to a world that no longer exists, while the heroes try to build something better with the help of their found family. Sweet Tooth's subject matter might seem too bleak for the current era, but its timeliness also empowers the show's message of hope and shared strength."[29]

The second season has a 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 22 critic reviews, with an average rating of 7.2/10. The website's critics consensus states, "More mature but still suitable for younger viewers, Sweet Tooth's sophomore season makes post-apocalyptic survival fun for the whole family."[30] On Metacritic, the second season received a score of 76 based on 7 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[31]

Of course, loyal readers of What’s on Netflix will know that season 3 of Sweet Tooth was coming for quite some time. We’ve been tracking developments on the show and published in February 2023 that the show had received an early renewal citing numerous people tied to the production.

Jim Mickle confirmed that seasons 2 and 3 had been shot back to back in a Tweet following Netflix officially announcing the news, saying, “Been sitting on this news for a loooong time. For those wondering why it took so long to make Season 2… it’s because we made TWO seasons back-to-back”

In a statement released by Netflix, Mickle said:

“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life. At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”

How well is Sweet Tooth Season 2 Performing on Netflix?

Thanks to Netflix’s top 10s and numerous other third-party stats, we can do a pretty deep dive into stats for Sweet Tooth season 2 in the coming weeks and months.

Let’s first dive into Netflix’s own official hours for the show, which we sadly don’t have an accurate comparison with season 1 to see how much of a rise/drop there was. The only stat released for season 1 was that 60 million households watched within 28 days.

Nevertheless, here’s how the top 10 hours break down thus far:

In our top 10 report for the first week of Sweet Tooth S2 being included, we found that when using CVE (hours watched divided by the runtime), the show just sat between Sex/Life and Shadow & Bone.

Advertising

Amy Seimetz (No Sudden Move, Pet Sematary) as Birdie upped to a series regular.

Cara Gee (The Expanse, Call Of The Wild) joins as a new series regular.

What to Expect from Sweet Tooth Season 3

Thus far, we only know that season 3 will be an “Arctic story,” with showrunner Jim Mickle saying in a statement:

“Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”

So that leads us to speculation on what we can expect from the forthcoming third and final season:

Will Gus meet his Mom?

By the end of the season Gus, Jepperd, Becky, and Wendy have set out from Wyoming and will be traveling all the way to Alaska.

As the potential key to the cure of the Sick aka the H5G9 Virus, it’s imperative for the rest of the human race that Gus is able to make it to Alaska and help his mom, Birdie, to develop a cure.

Advertising

Will Dr. Singh attempt to kidnap Gus?

Dr. Singh became so obsessed with his work that it repulsed his wife, Rani, who ultimately left him in season 2, and destroyed his research.

Rather than trying to find his wife, Dr. Singh is pursuing Gus instead, determined to continue his research. There may come an opportunity for Dr. Singh to strike when their guard is down, but chances will be slim.

Alternatively, if Dr. Singh learns that Birdie is alive, he may throw is eggs into that basket, and try to continue his research by helping her find a cure. However, if Birdie is alive, the chances of letting a man help her who caused such harm to her son are incredibly slim.

Is Birdie actually alive?

The biggest question is whether or not Birdie is actually alive.

Considering we’re yet to see Birdie in the flesh, there’s still no guarantee that she is alive and well. A tragic twist of fate would be for Gus and the group to find where’s supposed to be living, only to discover she is dead or missing.

What’s in Zhang’s cage?

It’s more than likely that the creatures inside her cage are hybrids. In particular, hybrids that are part-predator.

Advertising

As the series has deviated from the comics, the creatures in the cage could be ‘The Dog Boys’ a group of cannibalistic dog-hybrid children who were cruelly raised to be nothing more than weapons.

If Zhang goes after Gus, then expect her to bring her ravenous hybrid pets to hunt them down.

The epic conclusion to Gus’ (Christian Convery) journey will play out over eight episodes (the same length as the previous two seasons), almost precisely how showrunner Jim Mickle intended from the start.“In a lot of ways, it’s exactly the story that I imagined we would tell and in a lot of ways it takes on its own life,” Mickle told Netflix of Season 3, which has already been produced in New Zealand. “At the beginning, I think you set out to tell these landmark pieces of Gus’ story and the big pieces of the comic book, but the beauty of long-form storytelling and Gus’ journey over 24 episodes is the characters themselves tell you what they want to be. The crew and cast bring so much depth and point of view to who the characters are and where they’ve come from and where they’re going.”Read on below for new photos and everything you need to know ahead of the final season. What is Sweet Tooth Season 3 about? The colorful postapocalyptic series begins at an isolated home in Yellowstone and follows Gus and Jepperd (Nonso Anozie) as they make their way to Colorado. The  second season eventually brings the duo back to Yellowstone, but only for a short time: The finale ends with Gus, Jepperd, Wendy (Naledi Murray) and Bear (Stefania LaVie Owen) setting out for icy Alaska — and that’s where Season 3 picks up.“[It’s] another road trip story like Season 1, but in a very different way,” Mickle tells Tudum. “Season 3 is an Arctic story with exciting new adventures and what we hope will be a satisfying conclusion to this epic tale. Gus is going to see a side of the world and humanity that he didn’t see in Season 1 or 2.”Sweet Tooth’s setting isn’t the only difference in Season 3. Convery tells Tudum that we’ll also see a tonal shift. “Season 3 is darker than Season 2,” said the star. “Gus is growing alongside the series, starting to mature as the themes get darker. There’s a lot he has to deal with, and it’s peak Sweet Tooth intensity.”“In Season 3, everybody is dealing with some kind of wound or emotional loss, whether that was somebody in their life or a part of themselves,” Mickle told Netflix. “Everybody is looking inward and looking to move on and ultimately learning that life doesn’t stop. You have to keep putting one foot in front of another.”Sweet Tooth executive producers Susan Downey and Amanda Burrell are excited about how the show’s final chapter sees a rise in tension. “The ticking clock of, ‘Can they achieve their goal before it’s too late?’ is ratcheted up,” Downey tells Tudum. Burrell adds, “It just keeps amping up. It feels like a culmination emotionally and you get to see all of these characters together and their philosophies really at odds. Tension is high.”Related StoriesDeep Dive‘Sweet Tooth’: Everything You Need to Know About Season 2April 17Explainer‘Sweet Tooth’ Season 2 Ending, Explained: What Happened to Gus and the Hybrids?May 1Who’s Who‘Sweet Tooth’ Season 2 Cast: Who’s Surviving the Great Crumble? It seems unfair to call a drama about a ruined world a mess, but this feels, quite deliberately, all over the place.

Visually striking and grippingly plotted up to a cliffhanger of a season finale, Sweet Tooth is suspenseful, thoughtful, and timely in ways that couldn't have been planned.

It’s extremely sweet in parts, with creatures and characters that might have come from Jim Henson’s workshop, and nostalgia that recalls the likes of Stranger Things and Sweet Tooth’s own origins as a comic strip.

The eye-catching promo image for Netflix's new eight-part fantasy series Sweet Tooth introduces its lead character Gus, a child who was born part-animal, part-human.The post-apocalyptic show, which is co-produced by Robert Downey Jr and adapted from Jeff Lemire's comic book series, depicts the emergence of hybrid children after a mysterious virus sweeps the world. It's an admittedly bonkers premise but it could also become your new favourite watch, if early reactions are anything to go by.Here are six things to know about Sweet Tooth, which launches on Friday.1. It takes a minute to get your head around the conceptImage source, NETFLIXImage caption, British actor Nonso Anozie plays the intimidating but kind-hearted JepperdSweet Tooth's protagonist is Gus, a boy who is one of a generation of so-called hybrids. Gus has antlers, but other characters have been born with wings, fur, or even snouts or beaks. "Gus is a very curious and innocent hybrid boy, who's part-deer and part-human," explains 11-year-old actor Christian Convery. "He's very isolated, because he's been with his father in the woods his whole life, and he's never seen another human. Gus is very hopeful, positive, and always looking for the best in any situation."Hybrids emerged after a deadly virus wreaked havoc around the world. They are hunted and feared by most humans because it's unknown if the new species was the cause or the result of the virus, which is why Gus lives with his father in the woods - far from the dangers of civilisation.Early in the drama, we see Gus almost captured by hybrid hunters, before his life is saved by Jepperd, a large and intimidating man portrayed by British actor Nonso Anozie. The pair then embark on a journey together into the wider world."For me, Jepperd is this really tough exterior guy. We know he was a pro-athlete in the past, he has this dark past that he's trying to get away from," says Anozie. "So he's got leadership qualities, toughness, he knows how to be strong. But there is a heart of gold in there, that Gus somehow, through his innocence and optimism, which is something Jepperd hasn't come into contact with for many years, brings out in him."2. It's adapted from a comic bookImage source, Vertigo/GettyImage caption, Jeff Lemire launched the first Sweet Tooth comic in 2009, with the original series concluding in 2013It probably won't surprise you to learn that this bizarre set-up started life as a comic book series by Canadian writer and artist Jeff Lemire. "Jeff has so much richness in the comic books in terms of, not just the characters, but visually," says co-showrunner Beth Schwartz. "And so we tried to bring that to the screen, whether that was with his imaginative dream sequences that Gus has, or even just his iconic wardrobe." Lemire was heavily involved in the adaptation of his own comic books. "I'm a big Jeff fan and nothing would've been worse than him watching the show and being like, 'I don't get it'," laughs director Jim Mickle. "So we brought him into conversations very early and often. He was one of the first people to see the pilot, and over the years we've gained a real mutual trust and respect."3. Team Downey is behind the showImage source, Getty ImagesImage caption, Susan Downey and Robert Downey Jr are executive producers of Sweet ToothThe TV adaptation of Sweet Tooth has been developed by Team Downey - the production company set up by Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr and his wife Susan Downey. The company already has one Golden Globe-nominated show under its belt in the shape of Perry Mason, but it was also behind the critically-panned remake of Dolittle - so a mixed bag of production credits so far. When the trailer for Sweet Tooth dropped, many fans pointed out on social media that Downey Jr has effectively moved over from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the stable of its rival, DC Comics. But, Susan Downey explains: "When we got involved, it was a Vertigo title which then got absorbed entirely by DC. I hadn't even thought about it, until I read the same things you did, and then I kind of laughed at it, that people wanted to make a thing of it. But the truth is, if we can contribute to both universes being built out and people appreciating great storytelling and characters then I'm all for it."4. The critics have been broadly positiveImage source, NETFLIX"Fittingly switching between sweetness and bite, Sweet Tooth is a children's fable fit for grown-ups," wrote Empire's Ian Freer. "It's not startlingly original but is buoyed by affecting chemistry between Convery and Anozie."Huw Fullerton of the Radio Times awarded the show four stars. "Sometimes Sweet Tooth can drag, and not every storyline is as interesting as others... but once the story gets going it's quite compelling, and Gus makes for a winning (if sometimes slightly too precocious) protagonist.""Sweet Tooth is the new show to fall head over heels for," wrote Germain Lussier of Gizmodo. "It's got something for everyone and we think it has the potential to break out in ways only a very select few streaming shows do."Alex McLevy of the AV Club said there was "a lot to like about this shaggy dog of a road-trip series" but said the parallels with the coronavirus pandemic often make it less enjoyable. "Happily, the plague-driven paranoia only accounts for about one-third of the deeply trifurcated story, but it's enough to occasionally leave a world-weary viewer wishing to spend time elsewhere."5. It was filmed in New ZealandImage source, NETFLIXImage caption, Jepperd and Gus embark on what is essentially a sci-fi version of NomadlandThe first episode of the show was filmed over a year before the rest of the series - during which time the show jumped from Hulu, which had ordered the pilot, to Netflix, who picked up the full series. (We ask if producers were worried about Convery looking older in the intervening period. Schwartz replies: "Yes! That was our biggest worry." But it's not noticeable on screen.)"We did the first episode in New Zealand," Susan Downey explains. "And we actually thought we may shoot the rest of the series somewhere else. But everybody fell in love with shooting there. "There's an exaggerated quality about the universe that we built, but that's true to New Zealand as well. Everything is just a little brighter and larger than you would expect, it had everything that we needed.""The Covid security on set was A+," says Convery. Azonie adds: "The health authorities in New Zealand did a fantastic job of keeping us safe, and following the health guidelines strictly, that we could be free within our bubbles to create and tell the story."6. The tone has changed for the TV showImage source, NetflixImage caption, Entourage star Dania Ramirez also features in the showWhen the trailer was released, fans of the graphic novels noted the TV series looked more family-friendly than the very dark tone of the comics."Even fans of the original comics might be surprised by just how euphoric this version of Sweet Tooth can be at times," said Digital Spy's David Opie. "But in a genre as crowded as this, that's no bad thing."Susan Downey explains this was a deliberate tonal change the producers made to help the show be more accessible. "There are such beautiful themes that Jeff Lemire played with in the book, so we wanted to make sure we preserved that, but also wanted to pivot it and make sure it was done in a more palatable way," she says."We wanted it to be an enjoyable place for people to show up and watch something. I'm not a big fan of the traditional post-apocalyptic dark, rubble and greys and all that, but when we were able to clue into this storybook dystopia, we found there was a perfect match of something you've never seen before and an incredible message behind it, in this beautiful landscape, and the challenge of that was super-appealing to us."Sweet Tooth is available now on Netflix.Related TopicsTelevisionNetflixNew ZealandMore on this storyMan sells comic collection worth £350kPublished13 June 2019Top StoriesBBC report into Gaza medics 'disturbing' - CameronPublished15 minutes agoGaza medics tell BBC that Israeli troops beat and humiliated themPublished11 hours agoHaiti's PM resigns as law and order collapsesPublished2 hours agoFeaturesThe journalist caught in Kashmir's 'revolving door' of arrestsThe rise and fall of Haiti's Ariel HenryGaza medics tell BBC that Israeli troops beat and humiliated themThe Ukrainian sea drones hunting Russian warshipsSchoolboy recounts daring escape from Nigerian kidnap gangWhen wind turbine blades get old what's next?Watch: I'm just... Sweet Tooth season 2: key information- Lands on Netflix on April 27

- Based on graphic novel series of the same name

- Developed by Jim Mickle

- Stars Christian Convery, Nonso Anozie, and Adeel Ahktar among others

- Picks up straight after the first season

- Official trailer revealed in early March

- Third season yet to be greenlitIf Sweet Tooth season 2 feels like it’s been a long time coming, that’s because it has. Netflix’s big-budget adaptation of Jeff Lemire’s post-apocalyptic Vertigo comic was an unexpected hit when it landed in June 2021, and the streaming platform has now confirmed that the wait will end this April.Sweet Tooth's second season could be the perfect way to fill that Armageddon-shaped hole in your life – albeit in a slightly cuter, less gory way. The Netflix show’s set in a dangerous world still reeling from the aftermath of the so-called "Great Crumbl"” – the fall of civilization brought about by a global pandemic known simply as "the Sick". There are also lots of half human, half animal hybrid kids running around, who may or may not be connected to the fall of humanity.Gus, a young Hybrid with the antlers and ears of a deer, becomes a target for General Abbot and his Last Men militia. Luckily, former football player Tommy 'Big Man' Jepperd has become the kid’s protector. But, with the duo kept apart by events in the season 1 finale, it looks like Sweet Tooth season 2 is going to be anything but plain sailing for Gus and the other Hybrids. From its confirmed release date to its official trailer, and its cast to its plot, here's what you need to know about the return of one of the best Netflix shows.Sweet Tooth season 2 release dateThe Abbot brothers will continue to make life tough for Gus and the other Hybrids in Sweet Tooth season 2. (Image credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023)Netflix has confirmed Sweet Tooth season 2 will be released on April 27. The show's renewal wasn't a massive surprise. Not only did Sweet Tooth shoot straight to the top of the Netflix charts upon its initial June 2021 launch, the streamer also confirmed (via Deadline) that the show was watched by more than 60 million member households during its first seven weeks.Subsequently, the world's best streaming service took less than two months to confirm Sweet Tooth season 2 was happening, making the announcement via a video that played on its lead character’s love of candy:Sweet Tooth is officially coming back for Season 2!! pic.twitter.com/iVQ7QenxoFJuly 29, 2021See moreSweet Tooth season 2 trailerNetflix released the first Sweet Tooth season 2 trailer on March 21. It's a surprisingly creepy affair and suggests we might be in store for a darker second act in the tradition of The Empire Strikes Back. There are scenes of Gus being subjected to experimentation, lots of other Hybrid kids in captivity (including newcomers like Earl Elephant), and hints that Jepperd and Aimee Eden might be about to mount a rescue. However, as the General reminds Gus about his importance in finding a potential cure for "the Sick", the kid makes it clear that he’s ready to fight back. “My Pubba taught me, if I saw a human I should hide,” he says. “But I am done hiding!”Sweet Tooth season 2 storyJepperd and Aimee Eden will form an alliance in Sweet Tooth season 2. (Image credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023)Going on the trailer, we expect Sweet Tooth season 2's story to pick up exactly where its predecessor left off – especially as the show has started to bring its key players together. That's seemingly echoed by the surprisingly comprehensive Sweet Tooth season 2 synopsis released by Netflix:“As a deadly new wave of 'the Sick' bears down, Gus and a band of fellow Hybrids are held prisoner by General Abbot and the Last Men. Looking to consolidate power by finding a cure, Abbot uses the children as fodder for the experiments of captive Dr Aditya Singh, who’s racing to save his infected wife Rani. To protect his friends, Gus agrees to help Dr Singh, beginning a dark journey into his origins and his mother Birdie’s role in the events leading up to The Great Crumble. “Outside the Preserve, Tommy Jepperd and Aimee Eden team up to break the Hybrids free, a partnership that will be tested as Jepperd’s secrets come to light. As the revelations of the past threaten the possibility of redemption in the present, Gus and his found family find themselves on a collision course with Abbot and the evil forces that look to wipe them out once and for all.”Gus will reluctantly agree to assist in Dr Singh's experiments to save his wife from "the Sick". (Image credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023)Although the show is based on Jeff Lemire’s comic book series, the source material might not offer that many further clues about what to expect from Sweet Tooth season 2. Lemire’s story is much darker and more violent than the more family-oriented TV series, which makes some major changes from the page."The ambition was to create it for a family audience," producer Susan Downey told Variety. "We want the whole family to be able to watch together. We talked to Jeff Lemire about how Gus is our true north and how his journey and his relationship to Jep and this interesting cast of characters and challenges they meet along the way are what’s important. "That’s when we brought [co-showrunner/director] Jim Mickle on and we talked about creating this storybook or fairytale dystopia – this idea that if there was a drastic reduction in population, nature would take over again and it would be green and lush. We all felt confident, and Jeff gave us the blessing that we were keeping what was important to the storytelling and putting it in a more palatable environment."Aimee is on a mission to save her adoptive daughter, Wendy, from the General and the Last Men. (Image credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023)Beyond the shift in tone – "You can do different things with comics and with drawings that, if you were to do on screen, it would be beyond shocking," Lemire pointed out to the Daily Express – changes range from the minor (Jepperd was an ice hockey player in the comic, rather than a football star) to the fundamental (the characters of Bear and Aimee didn’t exist before the TV show). Other differences in Lemire’s comic include Jepperd handing Gus over to the Last Men, and the Animal Army being a group of adult fanatics, rather than the teen freedom fighters seen on TV.And even though the Covid-19 pandemic didn't manage to significantly disrupt the show – season 1 was filmed in New Zealand while much of the world was living through lockdowns – Schwartz says real-life has been an inspiration on Sweet Tooth in some ways."In a way, [the pandemic] helped us," she admitted to RadioTimes.com. "We didn’t have to go too deep into explaining to our audience, ‘This is the pandemic. This is what happened.’ We could do it with simple nods, like the hand sanitizer, or the ‘6-feet apart’ sign that everyone kind of understood."Sweet Tooth season 2 confirmed castSweet Tooth season 2 sees the return of many of the first season's cast. (Image credit: Netflix)Here's the Sweet Tooth season 2 cast list, as confirmed by Netflix:Nonso Anozie as Tommy Jepperd/Big ManChristian Convery as Gus/Sweet ToothAdeel Akhtar as Dr Aditya SinghAliza Vellani as Rani SinghStefania LaVie Owen as Bear/Rebecca WalkerDania Ramirez as Aimee EdenNeil Sandilands as General Douglas AbbotMarlon Williams as Johnny AbbotNaledi Murray as WendyJames Brolin as the NarratorThere'll also be plenty more Hybrid kids joining Gus in Sweet Tooth season 2 – some new, some returning from season 1. They'll include Yonas Kibreab as Finn Fox, Harvey Gui as Max Skunk, Aeon Scott as Anna Rabbit, Cyan Scott as Hanna Rabbit, Ruby Hall as Haley Mockingbird, Erin Minchin as Jo Jo Raccoon, Ravi Narayan as Earl Elephant, and Christopher Cooper Jr as Teddy Turtle. Amie Donald, who plays Maya Monkey, had another notable role recently as the titular child robot in smash-hit horror M3GAN.While it's yet to be officially confirmed, we'd be very surprised if we don't see more from Amy Seimetz, after the season 1 finale hinted she still has a big part to play as Gus’ mom – or, more accurately, creator – Birdie. There could also be a return for Will Forte as Gus's late 'Pubba' if flashback sequences are required.Sweet Tooth season 2 will add many more Hybrid children to the mix. (Image credit: Courtesy of Netflix © 2023)There's also been plenty of speculation about whether the show's most famous producer, Robert Downey Jr, might join the Sweet Tooth season 2 cast – and who he could play if he ever decides to step in front of the camera. "I think if our trio in the film became kind of a foursome and he just joined our band along the way and kind of helped us, and maybe helped us along the way in some way..." Anozie told ComicBook.com when asked who Downey could play. "I think a character that maybe didn't appear in the comic book, that he could actually come along and play. I actually think he would have made an interesting General Abbot as well, but I feel like Neil Sandilands has done such a great job in that. But if he was to come on, I think he'd have to join our gang, for sure."What questions will Sweet Tooth season 2 answer?Burning question: what is Birdie doing in Alaska? (Image credit: Netflix)There are so many questions that need answering in Sweet Tooth season 2.Most importantly, we need to find out why Birdie created human/deer Hybrid Gus (short for Genetic Unit Series 1), if/how his existence led to the birth of all of the other Hybrids, and if they’re connected to "the Sick" that has killed millions of people around the world. With a cure for the disease also likely to be a key storyline, it would be helpful to know how close Dr Gladys Bell got to finding a cure – and how far Dr Aditya Singh is prepared to go to save his infected wife, Rani. Will he sacrifice Hybrid lives, or will his meeting with Gus change his outlook on the endeavor – even if it means attracting the wrath of the General?Other questions on the need-to-know list include the reasons for Birdie’s trip to Alaska (is she working on a cure for "the Sick" of her own?), why those hallucinogenic purple flowers appear where people are infected, and whether Bear/Rebecca will be reunited with her Hybrid sister, Wendy. We’re also expecting flashbacks to show us more about Gus’s early days, and to fill in the gaps between the birth of Jepperd’s Hybrid child and his first encounter with Gus – presumably explaining his decisions to join, and subsequently leave, the Last Men."I spoke to Jim Mickle, the director, about the character arc and where Tommy’s going to go in relation to some of [the flashbacks]," star Nonso Anozie teased in an interview with the Daily Express. "Some of it is going to be directly from the comic and some of it is going to be stuff that suits our audiences and suits the characters of the Sweet Tooth retelling."And who knows, maybe Big Man will even get to try out the 'pass the ball' game Gus used to play with his Pubba. For more Netflix TV-based coverage, read our guides on Arcane season 2, The Witcher season 3, and Stranger Things season 5.Today's best Netflix dealsNetflix - Standard with ads$6.99/mthViewat NetflixNetflix - Standard$15.49/mthViewat NetflixNetflix - Premium$22.99/mthViewat Netflix
